Research School’s Symposium – on Mapping the field

The theme of the two-day symposium October 12-13 is “Mapping the Field” and it can be seen as an extension of the workshop in September. Among the speakers are the writers of the theses we were examining in the workshop: Cecilia Björck, Tina Carlsson and Andreas Gedin, and the key note speakers are Märtha Edling and Simon Sheik.

Scholarships

WALLENBERG TRAVEL GRANT, Application deadline: Tuesday, September 15, 2015

The University of Gothenburg annually allocates funds from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation to provide travel grants to mainly young researchers at the University of Gothenburg (including doctoral students). For the year 2015, there is SEK 25,000 available to be distributed within the faculty. The amount paid shall be made in each case to cover a substantial portion of travel expenses. No particular application required. Please attach any invitation or confirmation to a conference, etc. if you have one. There is an agreement between the heads of departments from 2011 on co-financing the travel grants.
Applications must be received by the Faculty Office, Anna Frisk, Box 141 (internal mail) or Box 141, 405 30 Gothenburg (normal mail) by Monday, 15 September 2014 at 16:00. Please write "Wallenberg Stipendium" on the envelope. You are also welcome to e-mail your application.

The Swedish Research Council's symposium on artistic research 2015
Lund University's faculty of arts, Malmö
November 25 - 26, 2015

Submission deadline: Tuesday, September 15, 2015

There is still opportunity to submit abstracts/ proposals for workshops/events to the Swedish Research Council's symposium on artistic research 2015. The theme of the conference is the Art University – political dream or broadened future for art? Submit abstracts/proposals no later than 15 September. The symposium will be held on November 25 and 26 at Lund University's faculty of arts, Malmö.
In addition to the theme, which will be approached through panel debates, lectures and discussions, the symposium will also demonstrate the width and depth of contemporary artistic research.
Abstracts/proposals should be submitted to Jan Kaila, scientific advisor in artistic research at the Swedish Research Council.
Conference languages are English and the Scandinavian languages.

Against Delivery

The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, doctoral programme will be hosting a two-day research event under the auspices of EARN and LAHP entitled Against Delivery.
The event aims to break down the presenter-audience relation by encouraging active participation and creative presentation formats. Against Delivery reflects the search for modes of practice-based research, which seek to generate alternative formats of exchange. The first day, Against Delivery: Researching Practice, will consider what practice- based research means, both for researchers and their audience. The second day, Against Delivery: Imag(in)ing Change, addresses how ethical considerations inform and impact upon practice-based research.

A-Venue at Avenyn
Submission Deadline: Sunday, September 13, 2015

A-venue is a joint exhibition venue on Avenyn, Gothenburg, for the three art institutions Valand Academy, HDK - School of Design and Crafts and Acadmey of Music and Drama. A variety of exciting activities will take place during the coming year. The premises will be used to present various projects initiated by teachers, students or PhD-students.
All teachers and students are encouraged to send suggestions in how to use the space. The space is around 250 sqm and there will be possibilities of having parallel activities. Activities can be for example exhibitions, presentations, social projects, concerts, seminars, performances, experiments, etc.

Artistic Research Yearbook 2015 from Vetenskapsrådet/Swedish Research Council:
From Arts College to University

From Arts College to University is the twelfth edition and begins with a examination of the academicisation that has taken place the past decade or so and still continues within artistic education and research. The opening article is an updated subject overview by the Swedish Research Council´s Committee for Artistic Research. Subject overviews have been drawn up for all the subject areas within the council as the basis for the Government´s Research Bill 2016.

This year we have two doctoral thesis reviewed – one on literary composition, the first of its kind in Sweden, and one on photography. The theses are by Fredrik Nyberg and Niclas Östlind, respectively and they both are from the University of Gothenburg. Download PDF version here.


Sätta visionen i verket – tanken bakom musikskapandet

In his new book Sätta visionen i verket, Börje Stålhammar focuses on how some internationally well established composers realize their musical visions. He describes how they give life to their thoughts and ideas and create sound artworks that other people can experience and be a part of. The book includes six composers, six conductors and six musicians. Börje Stålhammar is Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the School of Music, Theatre and Art, Örebro University.

Journal for Artistic Research (JAR) issue 8 out now

Issue 8 (2015) of JAR explores the relevance of the term appropriation in debates around artistic research. It includes contributions by Anna Walker (GB), Espen Lunde Nielsen (DK), Anna Laine (SE), Hilde Blix & Geir Davidsen (NO) and Deborah Middleton & Tim Moss (GB).
JAR is an international, online, Open Access and peer-reviewed journal for the identification, publication and dissemination of artistic research and its methodologies, from all arts disciplines. Browse the issue here.

Press Release from The Swedish National Agency for Education: Difficult conditions for art, music and crafts teacher
The Swedish National Agency for Education's national evaluation of crafts, music and art has revealed that while the subjects are perceived as both fun and interesting by students, many teachers are unqualified. The evaluation demonstrates the need to strengthen the teachers in art, music and crafts in various ways. Among other things, teachers have expressed a great need for skills in assessment and grading.

Professor Monica Lindgren from Academy of Music and Drama, and Senior Lecturer Peter Hasselskog from HDK - School of Design and Crafts have worked for the Swedish National Agency for Education for five years. They have been invovled in the national subject evaluations of music and crafts in grades 6 and 9, respectively. Read full press release here (in Swedish).

Högre Seminariet: Faculty seminar series Autumn 2015

Språk och oförnuft. Konstens kunskap, kunskapens konst 
WithPoet Magnus William-Olsson and writer and translator John Swedenmark. Magnus William-Olsson and John Swedenmark have build the innovative education 'Performativ kritik' in Stockholm. In the anthology Språk och oförnuft, Magnus William-Olsson has collected texts on how knowledge of theoretical concepts could take the arts language, traditions and practices as its starting point. During the seminar, chapters by Magnus William-Olsson (Tala med stenar) and John Swedenmark (Skillnad och återkoppling. Element till en språkbeskrivning) from the book will be discussed.

Seminar: Linda Shamma Östrand
Title: Being part of a negotiation - On how we relate to identities that find themselves in transit position

How do we relate to identities that do not seem to fall into the usual norms and how do we categorize them? Based on examples from her own art practice the artist Linda Shamma throws light on questions of how identities and cultures may seem intimidating in that they are not established. Yet how an identity can be under constant negotiation. With her father from Palestine and her mother from Sweden, Linda Shamma has been examining her own ambivalent position for some time. Linda Shamma, is an artist active in public art, gallery and academia.

Markus Miessen
Markus Miessen is an architect and writer. The initiator of the Participation tetralogy, his work revolves around questions of critical spatial practice, institution building, and spatial politics. Since 2011, Markus founded the Winter School Middle East (Dubai, now Kuwait).  He is the author of The Nightmare of Participation – Crossbench Praxis as a Mode of Criticality (Sternberg Press, 2010). Together with Nikolaus Hirsch, he is the editor of the Critical Spatial Practice book series at Sternberg Press.

Matilda Plöjel / Niclas Östlind
Matilda Plöjel is a graphic designer focusing on book and exhibition design. She runs the micro publisher Sailor Press and is one of the initiaters of Publishing as (part-time) practice. Her talk will be in dialogue with Niclas Östlind - curator, writer and PhD in Photography at Valand Academy.

Linda Shamma
Linda Shamma is an artist. Her work is conceptual and involves a variety of different media that challenges pre-conceived notions of the gallery and of the public. In recent years she has been primarily engaged in artistic research in which she examines the hybrid concept. Examples of works that adjacent to this theme is“Älg I postformulerat tillstånd” at Telefonplan in Stockhom and “Oophaga vicentei × Oophaga pumilio” where she has broadened her view of this synthesis by breeding a living hybrid, fertile, frog.

Blind Spots - A Symposium on art and migration

In light of the current situation where an increasingly heated political climate is shaping the rhetoric and discussion concerning migrants and refugees – we wish to investigate the agency of art and artists working with these matters or within related fields. ERC Workshop - Writing Successful ERC Starting & Consolidator Grant Proposals

This workshop is for those who consider to submit an European Research Council Starting and Consolidator Grant proposal in the near future and to advise you how to make your ERC proposal the best competitive proposal. The workshop will be in English and is led by Aya van den Kroonenberg, from Yellow Research (NL) who will provide practical information and discuss the evaluation criteria and the best strategy for drafting the proposal with the participants.

Welcome to 'En skrift på egna villkor', a half-day symposium on artistic research in Literary Composition. The symposium aims at summarizing and discussing seven years of artistic research, theses and projects within the subject of Literary Composition, which began in 2008 at Valand Academy. Speakers and discussants include Fredrik Nyberg, Helga Krook, Sigrid Combüchen and Martin Glaz Serup.

Symposium: WATCHED! Surveillance Art & Photography in Europe post 9/11

How can art and visual theory contribute to the understanding of our current surveillance society? During a two-day public research symposium, artists and scholars will present work on surveillance and its relation to representation, migration, community and control. Speakers include Peter Weibel, Hille Koskela, Marco Poloni, Shoshana Magnet, Jason Bowman, Ann-Sofi Sidén and Kari Andén-Papadopoulus. The symposium is co-organized by Valand Academy of Arts and the Hasselblad Foundation.
